A US provider survey has identified barriers to red blood cell exchange for people with sickle cell disease, The Guardian reports. Fewer than 3% of patients in the survey were recorded as receiving it, despite most participating providers reporting access to the procedure.
The study involved 100 healthcare providers and highlighted coordination difficulties, blood supply constraints and concerns about insurance. These findings describe access within the survey and do not establish that the procedure is suitable for every patient.
