NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day explains how processing can reveal the Andromeda galaxy more clearly in a composite photograph. The image combines 223 exposures taken from a garden observatory in Portugal.

The comparison demonstrates the reduction of aircraft and satellite trails, detector flaws and other unwanted marks. The aim is to remove interference introduced between the galaxy and the camera, rather than invent features in the galaxy itself.
