UNESCO has called for the restoration of education rights for Afghan girls and women. In a statement dated 11 August 2026, the agency described continuing restrictions on secondary and university education.

The organisation said it was supporting community learning, literacy and skills programmes with partners. It stressed that these opportunities cannot replace access to formal schooling.
